Bangladeshi ambassador hoists the flag at half mast.

The Bangladesh embassy has observed the 38th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the National Mourning Day. The embassy arranged a number of programmes to mark the occasion on Thursday.

The programme started with the hoisting of the national flag at half mast by Ambassador Syed Masud Mahmood Khundoker in the presence of embassy officials and Bangladeshi nationals. They observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to the memories of the Father of the Nation and the martyrs of August 15, 1975.

In the evening, a “Qur’an Khani” and a discussion on the life and works of the Father of the Nation were held. The messages from the president, prime minister and foreign minister of Bangladesh were read out.

Speakers highlighted the contribution of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. They urged all “to work wholeheartedly to fulfil his dream of a prosperous Bangladesh.” They also emphasised the need for educating the younger generation about the life and works of Bangabandhu.

In his speech ambassador Masud recalled the “epic” role played by Sheikh Mujibur in Bangladesh’s emergence as an independent country. He said August 15, 1975 was the saddest chapter in the history of Bangladesh.

He also said “as a nation we must learn a lesson here - our mourning should be turned into our strength and we should work hard to fulfil the dream of the Father of the Nation - a golden Bengal.”
