10 schools get SEC nod to hike fees

The Supreme Education Council (SEC) has authorised 10 private schools to increase their tuition fees for the upcoming academic year by up to 10%, local daily Al-Sharq reported yesterday.

According to the report, the number of private schools who had submitted requests to the SEC to increase tuition fees amounted to 54 schools.

SEC sources said that approval for any fee increase is granted according to certain conditions and standards. Further, any increase in fees without prior approval of the SEC is invalid. The source said that all kindergartens and private schools that have not raised tuition fees for more than three academic years may submit a request for an increase.

For the request to be approved, services of the school should have been developed to justify any increase. For instance, development of the school infrastructure, addition to educational resources and hiring teachers at higher salaries.
