The RasGas Project for Highway Patrols, a joint initiative of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and one of the most successful global energy suppliers, aims to contribute in reducing traffic accidents in the country.
One of the key objectives is to bring down the ratio of deaths caused by traffic accidents from 14 for every 100,000 person to 10 for every 100,000 person, according to a report posted on the MoI website.
An agreement in this regard was signed recently in the presence of the Minister of State for Interior Affairs and president of National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani and Minister of Energy and Industry HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada.
The signatories were Public Security director general HE the Major General Saad bin Jassim al-Khulaifi and RasGas CEO Hamad al-Muhannadi.
The project will contribute in several aspects, including the training of police personnel qualified specifically to monitor traffic on highways, and training officers for traffic accidents investigation.
RasGas will sponsor the training programme provided by the Northwestern University, Chicago, apart from enhancing the knowledge base in the areas of safety, health, environment and quality.
The project aims to implement a pilot programme to serve the Shamal area and keep up with the development of human and social development pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and in line with the strategy of RasGas in the area of social responsibility.
The Rescue Police Department (Al Fazaa), established four years ago, had launched in March a fleet of 44 new vehicles for highway patrol, marking completion of the “Najm” system, which includes more than 16 services related to receiving complaints, statistics, data analysis and decision making.
The Nissan Patrol SUVs are painted as per Al Fazaa colour theme with special markings to separate it as vehicles used for patrolling five highways linking different areas of the country. These are Shamal road, Salwa road, Dukhan road, Mesaieed road and Al-Khor coastal road.
The highway patrols are assigned with many duties in addition to security responsibilities such as various humanitarian services for road users who need assistance. The patrols also have the authority to deal with traffic accidents and securing the area until the authorities concerned reach the spot.
