Barwa Real Estate Group plans to develop an island, which will feature floating hotels, luxury villas and an aqua park, off the coast of Doha at a cost of QR20bn, it was announced at the Cityscape Qatar 2013 exhibition yesterday.

The Oryx Island will use electrical vehicles, water taxis, ferries and private boats to transport visitors.

Barwa Group also launched two other projects, namely Gulf Resort and Dara, on the opening day of the exhibition. The models of all the three projects are on display at the group’s pavilion at the Doha Exhibition Centre, the exhibition’s venue.

Speaking about the new projects, group CEO  Abdulla Abdulaziz  al-Subaie said: “As a diversified real estate development and investment holding company, Barwa has a solid track record in delivering the complete suite of real estate solutions and sustainable returns to its customers, partners and other stakeholders.”

The Oryx Island project, which is at the conceptual phase, is an integrated pedestrian exclusive development that will be able to accommodate about 25,000 people. “The project, once implemented, will be completed in seven to eight years.”

Al-Subaie said the Gulf Resort project, spread over 250 hectares, would have a natural harbour, three hotels and a shopping mall.

“Dara, a 176,000sq m residential development located in Fox Hills, Lusail,  features 53 buildings and 1,000 apartments and is split into two zones: zone 1 which is residential
and zone 2  a mixed-use complex.”

The project is estimated to cost around QR8bn.

He said the Dara project targeted high-end people. “It will be of great interest to  investors  as the project will be within walking distance of the stadium for the opening and closing ceremony of the FIFA Cup 2022.”

The project will include different types of apartments and integrated facilities such as restaurants, luxury hotels, shopping outlets, a fully integrated transportation system and fitness centres .”

Dara is also a sustainable project with a three-star GSAS rating.

“The Oryx Island & Gulf Resort are projects proposed by Barwa Real Estate in the waters of the Arabian Gulf to support the economy diversification plans in Qatar and not in any way related to the projects of the World Cup 2022,” a spokesman for the group clarified. Page 8
