Humanitarian dimension ‘key
element of foreign policy’

HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah said yesterday that the “humanitarian dimension” represented “an important and essential aspect” in Qatar’s foreign policy as per the directives of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.

The Qatari minister made the remarks at the opening session of the Global Forum on Peace and Security in Islam, held at the Institute for Diplomacy and Foreign Relations in Kuala Lumpur under the slogan, “Islam and
diplomacy”.

In his speech, al-Attiyah explained that Qatar’s leadership had realised various dimensions of the new world order and thus worked to cope with the system and openness to the world.

The Qatari diplomacy, he noted, was praised by many countries, organisations and bodies for its efforts and initiatives made to resolve a number of problems and issues at the regional and international levels.

He said that Qatar’s foreign policy had emerged from “the visions of the wise leadership of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad

He pointed out that Qatar’s foreign policy formed from the basic principles “of the State of Qatar through its national heritage pursuant to the national values” and principles of the Islamic religion.

Integrated Township for workers coming up in Ummal-Afaie

An integrated township that can accommodate 21,000 workers is being set up in Ummal-Afaie, local Arabic daily Al-Raya has reported.

The project is being executed by ABS & Partners Group in collaboration with Euro Group at a cost of QR122mn.

The proposed city will have 48 buildings and each building will include 80 rooms, 138 bathrooms and four large kitchens in addition to dining halls.

The company executing the project is also setting up a water desalination plant and a water recycling plant to irrigate the green areas surrounding the buildings.

Mohammed Akash, general manager and partner of ABS Group, said that the project aims to provide distinguished housing services to the workers at a reasonable cost. “The desalination station is being set up for the reason that the water used by workers is groundwater. This arrangement and the provision of recycled water for the green areas reflect our interest to build an environment friendly city,” Akash said.

He added that Qatar is the first country to build labour townships to provide comfortable living quarters to workers. “In building the proposed city, the company has taken into consideration the number of workers in Qatar and the growth of their number in the near future.”

The city includes recreational facilities like football ground, cafeterias, smoking places as well as a mosque. The township will be completed within a few weeks.
