A final peace and co-operation agreement between the Sudanese government and the rebel group, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), was signed in Doha yesterday by their representatives. HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani attended the signing ceremony.

“We are  grateful for Qatar’s continued support and efforts towards peace in different conflicts around the world. We (both parties) agree on all terms of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and seek to bring peace, security and stability to the region,” said DDPD head and Minister of State at the Presidency Amin Hassan Omar, who signed on behalf of the Sudanese government.

For JEM, the agreement was signed by its chairman, Mohamed Bishr Ahmad.

Also attending the ceremony was HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud, Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Taha, Head of the Darfur Regional Authority Al Tijani el-Sisi and several heads of diplomatic delegations in Qatar.

In the closing remarks, JEM vice president Arko Sulaiman Thahiya  invited other factions to join in on the peace efforts.

“We will commit to implement everything we have signed on and we call on the different societies, of ethnicity, religion and other institutions to help us bring peace and happiness to Darfur once again,” he said.

Co-signer Ahmad told Gulf Times that he and his parties had what it took to make sure peace was realised, also stating that there was no infighting within his party.

“We know Darfur and the people and we know how influential our forces are on the ground. We are united and will remain united. We don’t know how long it will take, but the JEM will make sure that Dafur’s goals are realised,” he said. Page 10
