The Goan community in Qatar  had the privilege to be the first to get a peek into the Konkani musical feature film Nachoea Kumpasar at an exclusive event at the Radisson Blue hotel yesterday. Konkani is the mother tongue of the Goan people. Some song sequences of the movie, directed by Bardroy Barretto, a native of south Goa, were exhibited during the function along with a detailed discussion on the making of the movie.
Nachoea Kumpasar (Dance to the Beat) is a tribute to Goan music and celebrates it through the eyes of legendary musicians of 1960s and 1970s. Set in the 1960’s the story is told through 22 songs and highlights the importance of music in the era and its impact on the Konkani language. A full length feature film, the movie is shot in Goa and Mumbai and lasts for almost three hours.
Speaking on the occasion, Barretto said that it took eight years fro him to complete the plot for the movie.
He explained: “ It took such a long time because we needed to research a lot of things about music and its impact on various jazz clubs in Goa and Mumbai during the 60’s and 70’s. Now the movie is in the post production process and will be released in May this year.”
He also said that he met around 200 musicians to collect details of the music as well as the jazz clubs during that time.
Barretto further stated that  there was a total investment of Rs25mn on the movie in addition to the non-paid contribution of some of the people.
He said: “Many people have contributed to the realisation of the movie in cash and free service. We are here in Doha to present a glimpse of this film for the very first time and to showcase the scale and substance of these Goan legends of yesteryears.”
Along with the director of the movie, Jackson Pereira, the music director of the movie was also present on the occasion. Pereira said: “Most of the songs of the movie are sung by a new singing talent from Goa.”
Regarding the plans of the release of the movie the crew members of the movie said that they were planning to take the movie to different destinations as the movie catered only to the Konkani population. It will be screened to these groups and if Doha Konkani community makes arrangements, it will be screened in Doha too,” added Barretto.
Goan Welfare Association President Simon D’Silva  co-ordinated the event.
