The Permanent Committee for Drugs and Alcohol Affairs (PCDAA) participated in the activities of scout camps organised by the Qatar Scouts and Guides Association (QSGA) with an open drug prevention day.
The programme was targeted at 150 primary school students to raise awareness on the risks associated with drugs and the methods of prevention.
The Open Prevention Day for Scouts was organised within the framework of the national strategy on combating drugs, and as part of the eighth phase of the national project to raise awareness on the consequences and risks of drugs (Weqaya).
Weqaya is implemented by the permanent committee in schools, universities, sports clubs, youth centres and scout camps across the country.
PCDAA Secretary Maj Ibrahim Mohamed al-Samih delivered lectures on preventive education and types of drugs & psychotropic substances. He also talked about the damage these narcotics could cause at various levels – social, economic and individual.
“Leisure time, a desire to imitate others and curiosity are some of the factors that lead to drug addiction,” he explained. Maj al-Samih further said drugs are divided into two categories: natural and chemical.
Later, Dr Ahmed Zaki from the PCDAA held an awareness quiz for students. It was a novel form of awareness programme adopted by the committee to educate youngsters on the perils of drug abuse.
