Spend quality time with kids
Dear Sir,
I totally agree with Gaith Abdul Gafoor’s point of view expressed in his letter, “Changing for the better”, (Gulf Times November 25). Being a mother of two, I feel that the current school timings are the best for our children, as those keep them fit both physically and mentally.
A letter-writer wrote that parents these days work very hard to satisfy their children’s needs and that some of the little ones will never understand the struggle their mothers and fathers make until they themselves become parents in future. He also stated that perhaps Gaith’s parents had ample time to spend with him or they might be self-employed! I would say they are wonderful parents who have brought up their child in the right manner by teaching him to be responsible and bold.
Many parents want to give their children everything they wish for. But we, as parents, need to know that fulfilling all their needs does not make them 100% happy. What they want most is our attention, love and support.
The pace at which technology is progressing and new smart communication devices appearing in the market, the young generation’s demands for them will never end and can never be met fully.
Your sons and daughters do not really want what you hadn’t even dreamt of in your childhood. If you had lived without them, so can they. We need to focus more on spending quality time with our kids rather than on striving to meet all their demands. They have to be taught the value of life and not the value of things.
Watching TV is a source of entertainment but what if this entertainment time is given to our kids by interacting with them? They would treasure that all their lives.
If we are always busy satisfying their needs, how can we maintain that bond of love and respect? It could turn out that they become so involved in the things we give them that they do not have time for us!
So, we need to teach our kids basic morals and to value life and moments spent with each other. We need to change for the better.

Hassles over flu shots
Dear Sir,
It’s becoming a hassle to get flu shots at the Ummghwailina health centre. After frequent visits and calls, we have been informed that it will take about two to three weeks to get vaccination and save ourselves from getting infected.
When the government has made flu vaccination free and accessible to all nationals staying in Qatar, what is causing this delay? According to Gulf Times, many big schools and colleges are taking anti-flu measures to safeguard their student population from H1N1 virus. But what about those small schools which are not addressing this concern? How can we help our kids get flu shots?
