Relief to motorists

Dear Sir,

The expansion of the Al Watan petrol station roundabout has greatly eased the traffic flow in all directions. This is a huge relief to motorists as it is the gateway to the Industrial Area from Doha.
If the roundabout on Street 33 and Al Kassereth Road is modified slightly now, the traffic flow would improve further. Currently one lane on the stretch near the roundabout is taken over by heavy vehicles waiting for checks at the technical inspection centre. This results in congestion in the area.

Give peace a chance

Dear Sir,

After 50 years of confrontation, the US and Cuba have established diplomatic ties. And after many years of negotiations, Iran and the major world powers have just signed a nuclear accord.
A Middle East zone free of biological, nuclear and chemical weapons is essential for global peace.
The Middle East is so loaded with war potential that all peace plans deserve our close attention. Mutual mistrust is high among nations in the region and opposing sides in conflicts feel they are the innocent victims of the aggression of the rival state or group.
All are caught in a web of self-justification, bitterness and hatred and seem to believe that force is the only language the opposing forces will understand.
Diplomacy is a must today and the first step in establishing it is forgetting the past, ignoring polemical arguments and giving precedence to common points which far outnumber polemical ones. War is a folly which does not provide the security it apparently promises.
Only disarmament will save us from total and utter destruction. It was Victor Hugo who said: “Peace is the virtue of civilisation, war is its crime.”
