Dear Sir,

I would like to ask the authorities to reverse the ruling which appears to ban people from entering the sea on the Wakrah beach.
Yesterday morning, my family was walking on the beach (as we have done every weekend for 30 years) and once we walked into the water to cool down, which was only inches deep being low tide, a police car drove out to us; flashing lights and horn blaring!
The police officer, who was very polite, informed me that we were not allowed in the sea. Obviously I questioned this, but the officer was insistent that this was the rule. Evidently an accident had occurred, with fatalities, but surely this regulation is overkill.
If you stop people at Wakrah, do we also stop people diving, jetskiing, sailing, even operating offshore?
The sea, by its nature, is inherently dangerous, but people accept that risk for the enjoyment they gain; it is an informed decision they make.
Qatar has a rich history of union of its people with the sea, Sadly access to a beach or the sea in Doha is virtually impossible nowadays, unless one wishes to join a 5-star hotel or has a boat.
Wakrah is the nearest beach available for public use and I for one feel very sad to be told that the nation of pearl divers now bans its residents from entering the sea.

Middle way is the best way

Dear Sir,

The two letters “The right way to rear children” (Gulf Times, April 14), and “Parent-child relationship” (Gulf Times, April 15), all express very lofty sentiments.
In theory they sound good but in practical terms, how helpful are they?
The secret behind healthy parent-child relationship is simple, actually: parents and children should spend their free times together, interacting and enjoying each other’s company. Parents should take a keen interest in their children’s education, without interfering in it too much. A hovering parent is a nuisance parent. But a disinterested parent is no parent at all. The middle way, as in many things, is the best way here.
