The driving forces behind the ongoing radical transformation of the ICT industry will be in the spotlight at the four-day ITU Telecom World 2014 event in Doha, which Qatar is hosting from today.

Held for the first time in Doha, the event will provide an important update on new developments in communication technology, and explore how these are transforming human lives, with a focus on areas that are being deployed in Qatar and the wider region.

In particular, new innovations in so-called “Smart Technology,” including “Smart City”, “Smart Building” and “Smart Stadium Technology” will be on display for the first time.

ITU Telecom World is the leading platform for the global ICT community to debate the future of the sector, network at the highest level and showcase products, solutions and investment opportunities. It draws a unique mix of public and private sectors representing both emerging and developed markets from around the world.

Hosted by the Government of Qatar, with the support of Ooredoo, the event will explore three major future scenarios vis-à-vis the ICT sector and how they will impact businesses and lives. These are disruptive scenarios in the horizon, cross-sector partnerships and the intelligent future.

Vodafone Qatar, which joined ITU earlier this year as a sector member in ITU’s Telecommunication Standardisation Sector (ITU-T), will address smart cities solutions and debate related trends at the event.

Telecom experts from all over the world will examine the possibilities of a further disruption to the ICT sector and how it impacts connecting services such as broadcasting.

They will also try and find answers to how sector convergence might take shape and what other disruptive scenarios lay on the horizon.

Cross-sector partnership options will figure at various sessions over the four-day key event. Opportunities in verticals now involve partnerships across sectors with a whole set of new stakeholders within this environment.

Huge potential is now offered through developments such as Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, big data-centric applications and innovative business models. But what regulatory or policy challenges do these pose? What are the best business models or enabling tools?

According to ITU secretary-general Hamadoun I Touré, debates at ITU Telecom World 2014 would boldly tackle both the risks posed to the ICT industry as well as the vast pool of opportunities for its future growth, which span new, cross-vertical partnerships, new technologies, policies and business models.

ITU Telecom World 2014 kicks off with an exclusive one-day ‘Leadership Summit’ on the future for leaders from governments, regulatory bodies and across the ICT industry.

Led by renowned futurists and thought leaders including Gerd Leonhard, the summit will feature a highly interactive, powerful programme designed to provide an immersive experience for participants and help unravel some of the complexities of the future, equipping decision-makers with a clear understanding of developments in the sector to guide future policies and strategies.

From the exclusive ‘Leadership Summit’ to the interactive panel sessions, keynotes and workshops of the four-day forum, World 2014 aims at equipping attendees with an understanding of how the future might look, the strategies, policies, models and markets to consider.
