Enlightening experience
Dear Sir,
We need to understand and admire religion so that we could make humble efforts to establish peace and harmony among different nationalities in our world.
In this context, I would like to share an experience I had during my recent visit to the US with my family. While in the Indiana state there, my family and I visited a Pizza Hut one beautiful evening. Upon enquiry at the outlet, we came to know that no halal chicken or meat was available there. So being a Muslim family, we decided to order a vegetable pizza and requested the waiter to prepare it without any non-vegetarian ingredients at all.
The person showed great understanding of our sentiment and assured us that special care would be taken and only vegetarian items would be used to prepare our pizza.
Additionally, he reassured us by saying: “I will personally check that the common knife used for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian pizzas will not be used to cut your pizza.”
We were touched by his words. The most amazing thing was that it was he who had suggested the trivial matter of the knife which had not even crossed our mind. That restaurant and its extremely courteous staff truly made our evening and we enjoyed our pizza.
We left the Pizza Hut, exchanging warm handshakes and smiles with its staff, more akin to friends than strangers.
As a teenage girl, it taught me one important lesson: respect and help others, they are the keys that unlock our soul.

Need for discipline
Dear Sir,
The points raised in the letter “Parents’ responsibility” (Gulf Times, October 19) do make sense. I hope that all parents will take the message in the right sense.
In the Gulf, many expatriate children are spoilt by their parents who go out of their way to meet  their demands. Parents here seldom reject their children’s demands, be they expensive toys or electronic gadgets. I don’t think that is the right approach.
In matters of dress code for their children also, parents often take a relaxed approach.
We love our children, but that doesn’t mean all their wishes need to be fulfilled. They need also discipline and gentle guidance.
