Time for urgent action on Gaza
Dear Sir,
The critical situation in the Middle East beggars belief; the region is in utter chaos and, quite frankly, it is the United Nations’ fault.
Political double standards render the UN irrelevant and dangerous. The preamble to the UN charter clearly stipulates the organisation’s mission. It states that the UN was founded to prevent and resolve international conflicts and help build a culture of peace in the world.
The United Nations desperately needs reform. The power relations of the global organisation structure, particularly of the undemocratic Security Council, cry out for reform. Yet the most powerful member states determinedly resist any prospect of reduced authority. The desire of the Second World War victors to orchestrate the world, however anachronistic, is undiminished.
The world’s reluctance to come to the aid of civilians in Gaza will turn this conflict into a major betrayal  of the 21st century, reminiscent of many that stained the last century.
The world remains inert as civilians are massacred in Gaza.
Edmund Burke once said “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”.  The critical situation in Gaza cannot and should not continue like this. The international community must act now.
