Dear Sir,

Major road accidents are quite common on Qatar’s roads these days.  One often witnesses new diversions with concrete barriers on many streets as roadworks go on at many stretches.

We lost our brother in a car crash near the Doha Exhibition Center area recently. A friend was also seriously injured in the same accident which was caused as the car skidded out of control. The road at the time of the crash was covered with sand which might have  blown from the nearby construction area and I suspect it  may have contributed to the skidding of the vehicle.

Workers at the construction site say they witness three to four accidents daily in the area.

I would like to request authorities concerned to push contractors to speed up their work here and similar areas so that roads remain safe for drivers.

The marked increase in the number of vehicles on roads, in addition to road closures due to construction and poor urban planning, are the key reasons for traffic accidents and jams on Qatar’s roads.

Massive awareness campaigns must be organised frequently to teach the public about traffic safety. In this context, I would like to appreciate  the Ministry of Interior’s traffic and road safety awareness programmes that form part of the campaign which has the motto “One Second”.

Surge in Mers cases

Dear Sir,

The latest surge in  the deadly Mers coronavirus cases is alarming indeed. It is strange that vaccination is still to be developed against the virus even though the  disease has been around for some time now.

A cousin to the Sars virus that erupted in China a decade ago, causing a global health scare, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers) causes flu-like symptoms, with fever and respiratory difficulties, but can also lead to organ failure.

One hopes the World Health Organisation and drug research companies step up their work in developing a vaccine to contain the disease.
