Come to the aid of QAWS

Dear Sir,

I would like to entreat the government to come to the aid of the Qatar Animal Welfare Society (QAWS) which has been sheltering abandoned animals and finding homes for them.

In recent years, the government has spent billions of riyals in developing the sectors of  education, sports and culture in Qatar. Its economy and welfare programmes are the envy of many nations.

Qatar is a model of growth for other countries. However, along with improving the lives of its citizens, the government must realise that animals too must be given due consideration, as all are God’s creations.

In this regard, I wholeheartedly support the views of Rajesh Nair and Mark Andrew expressed in their letters (“QAWS needs govt support”, “A sad day for Qatar” Gulf Times, July 30).

I would like to quote Mahatma Gandhi in this regard: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the ways its animals are treated.”

Help animal shelter

Dear Sir,

The letters expressing concern over the closure of the Qatar Animal Welfare Society (Gulf Times, July 30) are highly appreciated.

The society’s closure is indeed a bad news to Qatar residents in general and to animal lovers in particular. QAWS has been doing a great job by giving shelter, medical assistance and permanent loving homes to all types of abandoned animals. Many volunteers contributed to the society’s work.

QAWS offered a great place to people who could not keep their pets at home for many reasons. It gave residents an opportunity to take a dog and go for a walk.

QAWS had suffered a devastating fire in September 2009 and the shelter was burnt to the ground. But it resumed its work soon after. But now the closure seems permanent.

I urge the government and all animal lovers in Qatar to provide necessary assistance to the organisation so that the closure decision can still be reviewed.

Inspiring message

Dear Sir,

I would like to address Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani school pupil and education activist, through this column.

We are proud of you, my sister. You have won the hearts of the world. Awareness on girl child education is spreading because of your campaign. Your global presence will inspire many others.

Malala’s message crystallised into one sentence: “One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.”

Be bold, have courage...the world is with you. Arise, awake and stop not until the goal is reached.

You deserve the recommendation for the Nobel Peace Prize.
