At least eight people were killed in eastern Nepal in a one-vehicle accident yesterday, authorities said.

Nine others were injured in the accident in Okhaldhunga district, about 125km southeast of the capital Kathmandu.

“The jeep was carrying beyond its capacity and it rolled back downhill as it was going up a slope,” said police officer Dambar Bahadur Bika.

The passengers were mostly returning after visiting relatives during the festival of Tihar.

Lightning kills girl: A girl died after she was struck by lightning in Solukhumbu district on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Ramila Bishwokarma, 13, according to police. Ramila died on the spot in the incident.

Six others, who fell unconscious after they were struck by the thunderbolt, are receiving medical treatment at Kanku Sub-Health Post. Their condition is normal, said police.
