A 60-year-old man was killed by a wild elephant in Nepal’s south-western district of Bara, local media reported yesterday.

The man was walking to his cornfield near his house late Saturday and never returned home. His family found his body on Sunday. He had been trampled to death by an elephant, according to eKantipur news portal.

A herd of wild elephants has been rampaging through area fields since last week, causing fear among local residents, the report said.

There are around 170 adult wild Asian elephants in Nepal, and roughly the same number of working jumbos, according to government figures.

Conflicts between animals and humans have increased in Nepal recently as human settlements encroach on animal territory.
