Tamil Nadu has observed a state wide semi-curfew to protest a recent decision by the Karnataka government to build a new dam across the river Cauvery at Mekedatu in that state.
The Karnataka government had sanctioned Rs250mn for the project. Many government transport including buses and trucks kept off roads but shops and other businesses opened shutters in the evening.
As many as 55 Tamil Nadu parliamentarians including ruling AIADMK and opposition DMK politicians met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop the project.
They urged him to set up the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulatory Authority to settle the inter-state river dispute.

Juice for policemen to beat the heat
In order to beat the scorching summer heat, the state government has started distributing buttermilk, lemon juice and summer fruits for traffic policemen in many districts.  Some policemen have also been provided sunglasses and other protective gear.
Traffic policemen despite being provided with shady watch towers often have to stand in the open to manage erratic human, animal and transport traffic.

Girl writes exams after well mishap
A 17-year-old girl fell into a well behind her house but was rescued within an hour to write her Class XII board exams at Madipakkam in suburban Chennai last week.
S Supraja, reportedly fell into the 30ft deep well while walking up and down studying her textbook early that morning.  Her family woke up on hearing her cries and informed the fire service. Since it was a narrow well, only one fire personnel was able to enter it. He harnessed Supraja to his body to come out.
