Delhi police have provided security to senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti’s wife Lipika Mitra, officials said here yesterday.
“She had expressed apprehensions to us and we have provided her full security,” Police Commissioner B S Bassi said.
Bharti’s wife has accused Bharti of domestic violence and had met police officers on Wednesday evening expressing fears.
A First Information Report (FIR) has not yet been filed, the police said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Mitra complained to the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) that that the AAP leader has been abusing her ever since their marriage in 2010.
The DCW issued a summons to Bharti and asked him to appear before the commission on June 26.
The AAP legislator, who was a law minister in the earlier AAP government that came to power in Delhi in December 2013, has termed the charges “baseless”.
Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party protested
outside Bharti’s office here yesterday.
Holding banners and placards against Bharti, the protesters included a sizeable number of BJP women members. They gathered outside Bharti’s office in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar and demanded his resignation as a legislator.
As Bharti tried to leave, the crowd blocked his car. It was only after police intervention that the protesters budged.
“The real face of the AAP and its leaders has been exposed. How will they protect the women in Delhi, when women in their own homes are unsafe? He should resign,” BJP Delhi unit president Satish Upadhyay said.
