Two marine engineers were arrested for cheating 17 engineers of Rs5mn after promising them jobs in Chennai last week.

Sudhir Babu and Bharat Kumar met while working at a shipping firm in Dehradun in Uttarakhand in 2011. The duo decided to make quick money and set up a placement agency at Pallavaram in Chennai. However they went underground when their ‘clients’ discovered the fraud. They were arrested from Sudhir Babu’s native state of Andhra Pradesh.

defect delivers
third child

 

A 26-year-old woman afflicted with a congenital defect, where her major organs including the heart are located on the reverse side of her body (Situs Inversus Totalis) delivered a large baby girl weighing 4.1kg at a health centre in Chennai last week.

Doctors said this was Bhuvaneshwari’s third baby. Her first daughter is eight years old, while the second girl died in childbirth.

“Both the mother and baby are fine. She is also planning for sterilisation which we will do only after getting the opinion from an anaesthetist and cardiologist,” a doctor said.

 

New US consul
general takes charge

 

Philip A Min has been appointed the new American Consul General for South India. He took charge at his Chennai office last week.

Philip has formerly represented the US in South America, Europe, East Asia, South Asia, Brazil, Poland, Korea, Japan, Colombia and Pakistan in his 27 years as a foreign diplomat.

“This is an exciting time to arrive in south India and for US-India relations as we explore together new opportunities to deepen and broaden our strategic partnership.” He is married to Eun Young Lee, a concert pianist.

 

Rabies affected
man dies

Tension prevailed when a 28-year-old man affected by rabies escaped from his cell, bit another patient and died later at the Tiruchi government hospital last week.

Arafat, a labourer from West Bengal, was bitten by a dog three months ago while working at a factory in Karur about 82km from Tiruchi. He contracted rabies and his condition worsened because he took herbal treatment instead of allopathic medicines. He was confined to a solitary cell at the Tiruchi hospital.
