India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will open a regional centre in the Gulf within two months to cater to nearly 150 schools affiliated with the board from the region.

“For administrative matters, officials of the CBSE schools in the Gulf have to come to Delhi,” Minister of State for Human Resources Development Shashi Tharoor said explaining the rationale behind the proposed offshore centre.

“The regional centre in the Gulf will begin functioning within the next one or two months”.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy opened a regional centre in the state capital, the ninth in India, in the presence of the minister on Saturday, making it more convenient for the schools in the southern state to liaise with the board.

The minister also clarified that the term “appropriate government” mentioned in the newly enacted Right to Education (RTE) Act means the federal government for the CBSE-affiliated schools.

There are 60,000 students between 9 and 12 grades studying in the CBSE-affiliated schools in the Gulf and the regional centre will come as a huge relief for them.
