HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, chairman of Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah Foundation for Energy &
Sustainable Development met several prominent Japanese leaders including Toshihiro Nikai, Chairman of
Parliamentary Association for Friendship with Qatar and Motoo Hayashi, Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry. They discussed several bilateral issues, particularly energy ties, between Qatar and Japan. Qatar is one of the largest suppliers of oil and gas to Japan and Japan’s second-largest LNG supplier and third largest supplier of oil. Al-Attiyah congratulated Hayashi, who recently took over as the Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry and hoped the economic ties between the two countries would get further strengthened. The meetings were attended by Qatar’s ambassador to Japan, Yousuf Mohamed Bilal. Qatar’s foray into the global LNG market was realised with the shipment of the first output from a Qatargas plant in October 1996 to Japan’s Chubu Electric Power. Al-Attiyah also spoke about Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah Foundation for Energy & Sustainable
Development, which will be formally launched in Doha on November 1. The vision for the ‘not-for-profit’
foundation is to become the leading think-tank in the region and one of the leading institutions in the world in the areas of energy and sustainable development.
