Qatar District Cooling Company (Qatar Cool) has started the second phase construction of its third plant in West Bay by increasing capacity by an additional 25,000 tonnes of refrigeration (TR).
This was highlighted during the signing of an amended contract in a ceremony attended by Qatar Cool senior management, Al Jaber Engineering & Contracting, and ADC Energy Systems officials at West Bay.
Qatar Cool CEO Yasser S al-Jaidah said the signing ceremony marks “a significant milestone” and emphasises the company’s expansion “to Qatar’s long-term commitment to sustainable development.”
“It’s with great pride that we officially continue our expansion plans by opening our fourth plant in Qatar, which is the third in the West Bay area. The benefits of district cooling are increasingly being recognised by governments, developers, and end users.
“Not only does it reduce operating and building maintenance costs, but it also helps reduce carbon footprints and offers other environmental benefits in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030,” al-Jaidah explained.
Once completed in 2016, al-Jaidah said, the plant will provide cooling to residential and commercial towers. The plant was designed to produce 40,000 tonnes of cooling once completed, cutting down energy usage by 40% to 45% compared to conventional cooling systems.
“Having completely sold out the capacity of our other plants in West Bay, which serves more than 50 towers, the new plant is a response to the steadily growing demand for district cooling services,” al-Jaidah said.
He added, “Developers, who were attracted by the numerous benefits of district cooling, are already being placed on the rapidly growing list for Qatar Cool’s increased services.”
Significantly more cost effective over the long term than conventional solutions, al-Jaidah said district cooling is also environment-friendly.
“In the past five years, Qatar Cool has achieved more than 880mn KW of energy, which eliminated around 490mn KG of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere since 2010. This is equivalent to removing more than 93,000 vehicles from the roads or planting 13mn mature trees,” al-Jaidah said.
In addition to its West Bay plants, Qatar Cool also operates the world’s largest district cooling plant, “The Integrated District Cooling Plant” at The Pearl-Qatar, which supplies 130,000 tonnes-cooling to the island’s 45,000 residents.
