French cabin-crew unions yesterday called for a second strike at EasyJet next week, after a first one yesterday forced Europe’s No 2 discount carrier to cancel 38 flights.

The unions SNPNC and UNAC are calling staff to stop work again on December 31 and January 1, Laurent Nicolas, a representative of the SNPNC union, based in Roissy, near Paris, said in a telephone interview.

Unions are demanding a larger share of profits after EasyJet’s earnings were boosted by more than a fifth this year. The carrier ramped up its presence at key airports and targeted corporate travellers amid intensifying competition as full-service rivals faced strikes over their efforts to develop discount units.

The airline scrapped 34 domestic services to and from Lyon, Brest, Nantes, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lille, Nice, Paris Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports, according to a statement from the Luton, England-based company. It also dropped Milan-Paris and Barcelona-Lyon connections.

Passengers due to travel to or from France until midnight need to check their flight’s status before heading to the airport, EasyJet said.
