Qatar Airways ordered four GE90-powered Boeing 777 Freighters, with an option for an additional four 777 Freighters. The firm engine order is valued at more than $250mn on list price, GE Aviation said in a release yesterday.

“The GE90 engine continues to outperform our expectations,” said Chaker Chahrour, vice-president and general manager of Global Sales & Marketing at GE Aviation.

“The engine was enhanced to reduce fuel burn by 3.6% from the 2000 launch specification and is well below international standards on key emissions. It remains one of the most popular engines in the GE portfolio.”

More than 1,500 GE90-115B engines have been ordered by customers for their Boeing 777-300ERs, 777-200LRs and 777 Freighters. At 115,000 pounds of thrust, the GE90-115B engine includes such performance-enhancing features as three-dimensional aerodynamic (3-D aero) compressor and wide-chord, swept composite fan blades for greater efficiency. The dual annular combustor emits no more than 40% of the hydrocarbons allowed by today’s international standards. Snecma of France and IHI Corporation of Japan are revenue-sharing participants in the GE90 programme.

The GE90-115B engine is part of GE’s “ecomagination” product portfolio — GE’s commitment to implementing innovative, cost-effective technologies that enhance the customers’ environmental and operating performance.

Qatar Airways today is flying a modern fleet of 134 aircraft to 144 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North American and South America.

Qatar Airways has orders worth over $50bn for more than 300 aircraft.
