More than 45 engineers and scientists from various sectors related to the oil and gas industry discussed collaborative research opportunities during the Petroleum Environmental Research Forum (PERF) biannual meeting held at the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) recently.

Hosted jointly by ConocoPhillips, Qatar Petroleum and Total, the participants learned about the ongoing efforts being conducted at research centres of the energy companies operating at the QSTP.

Dr Samer Adham, global water solutions manager of ConocoPhillips welcomed the international and local guests and provided an outline of the technical agenda and anticipated outcome.

Dr Veronica Blackwell, chair of the PERF board of directors, provided highlights of the forum’s mission, ongoing projects and activities.

All the energy research centres operating at the QSTP (ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Maersk, Shell, and Total) presented highlights of their environmentally related research programs. In addition, a tour of four of these research centres was conducted for further demonstration of their ongoing activities and capabilities.

QP hosted a luncheon to welcome the PERF meeting participants at their QSTP research centre.

In the keynote luncheon presentation, Dr Ali al-Mulla, HSE manager at QP presented the results of a collaborative research effort with Total on modelling the effect of various factors contributing to surface level ozone concentrations.

Dr Nassar al-Mohannadi, manager, QP Research Centre at the QSTP summarised the various activities and research programmes planned and/or are being implemented by QP.

The second day focused on research activities being done at the Gas Processing Centre of Qatar University and the Qatar Energy & Environment Research Institute (QEERI) of Qatar Foundation.

A brainstorming session with all participants was conducted to identify new environmental research opportunities for upstream and downstream operations.

During that session, various ideas of collaborative research projects were proposed, some of which were selected for further development by PERF member companies.

All technical presentations for the PERF meeting were hosted at the auditorium of Total’s Research Centre – Qatar (TRCQ).

Dr Philippe Julien, manager, TRCQ, provided the safety directions of the facility and also presented highlights of the research projects conducted at TRCQ.

PERF is a research and development joint venture formed to provide a stimulus and forum for the collection, exchange, and analysis of research information related to environmental issues and technologies. In addition, PERF also provides a mechanism to establish joint research projects.

PERF’s member corporations recognise the importance of a clean, healthy environment and are committed to support cooperative research and development.
