It seemed there was just no escape Wednesday. Doha hasn’t seen downpour of such intensity, nay fury, in a long time. Schools, malls, stores were all in the line of Nature’s wrath.
Where the annual rainfall for the entire country is hardly 50mm, Doha had received the sucker punch in a matter of hours. At the Hamad International Airport itself, 79.5mm rain had fallen, according to Qatar Meteorology Department.
The streets of Doha were flooded, leading to traffic logjams as the municipality got down to rescue efforts with water drainage trucks out in full force for the clean-up. The storm system clouded the skies over the capital the entire day.
As a result, schools and daycare centres were prompted to close down early even as they announced closure for today as well.
