Forty Qatar-based artistes performed over the weekend in a fundraiser at Quality Hypermarket for earthquake relief in Nepal. The programme was supported by Basanta Films, Syanja Service Society, Tamu Society, Khas Chhetri Society and Rhythm Art Center.
More than 600 people attended the 10-hour-long programme. About QR13,800 were raised at the fundraiser, according to the organisers.
The musical programme was chaired by coordinator Madhusudhan Dangi, and Ishwor Kafle, director of Basanta Films, attended the programme as the chief guest.
The programme started with a one-minute silence for those who lost their lives in the earthquake. Singer Rama Aryal performed the national anthem of the country. Folk singer Om Sangam performed one of his most popular songs. He said he considers music as a therapy. “Our country is in pain, and music can heal that pain and bring happiness,” Sangam said.
Srijana Lama performed one dance, dedicating her performance to her country. Artist Rem Kumar Lama performed a song about the pain and agony caused by the earthquake. His song talked about the vast destruction caused by the disaster.
Child artiste Rabina Pokharel performed a cultural dance. Performing for the first time in a community programme, Pokharel said she has performed many times at her school — Cambridge International School.
A troupe of Nepalese Cultural Family (NCF), led by Kiran Lama, then executed four dances. Dancers Ratna Adhikari, Ajay Shrestha and Sabina Lama supported him in the dance.
Rabin BC, new in Qatar, performed a folk song.
Dohari — a duet song competition — was performed by Jyoti Gurung, Kamala Gurung, Sarad Pandey and Dil Kumar BK. Flutist Purna Nepal, madal (Nepalese percussion instrument) player Ishwor Pokhrel, Tabala (Nepalese classical percussion instrument) player Deepak BK and drummer Ishwor BK supported the performance. Among the dohari singers, Jyoti Gurung was a top 10 finalist in the Nepalese Singing Idol 2015.
Singer Suraj KC performed a Nepali new-age song during the programme. He said he was more than happy to perform for the social cause and thanked the organisers who believed in his talent and provided such a platform.

The last performance of the day was another dohari performance by singers Nanu Gurung, Indu Lawoti, Ganga BC and Dhruba BC. The performance was about the discrimination based on gender, religion, caste and ethnicity.
