The Blue Star Youth Club felicitated non-resident Nepalese volleyball players at a cultural programme held recently at Al Dosari Park in Shahaniya.
Community leaders and representatives from various organisations including Durga Prasad Bhattarai, KB Kamal, Ziauddin Ahmed, Venkat Ramanan and Hamid Zafar attended. The felicitated players were from the ten teams that participated in the tournament organised by Qatar Building Company on the occasion of Qatar National Sport Day.
The people honoured at the function are: winning team manager Durga Prasad Bhattarai and players Surya Roka (skipper), Bijendra Purkoti, Kehar Singh, Raj Kumar Bista, Til Bahadur Ale, Kamal Ale and Prem Aslami.
The runners-up in the tournament — Balananda Chhetri (skipper), Pradeep Bista, Surya Ghatane, Arjun Mijar, Narayan Panthi, Pitamber Saru, Niran Bahadur Kumal and Bhul Nepali — were also honoured.
Surya Roka from Group B was declared the best player of the tournament.
Mohammed al-Dosari, owner of the Dosari Park; Mohammed Zafar from Qatar Municipality Council; Nasser Suwaidi from Qatar Olympic Committee; South Africa’s Ambassador to Qatar Saad Cachalia praised the teams for the discipline they showed during the tournament.
Al-Dosari also praised Nepalese cuisine and folk tunes, saying they added “freshness” to the event.
The cultural programme at the event featured more than 20 performances by Doha-based artistes. The opening performance was by the artistes of Nepalese Cultural Family, led by dancer Kiran Lama. A Dohari competition (duet song) between Sarad Pandey and Laxmi Gurung also entertained the crowd. Singer Dol Raj Pariyar’s performance made the audience dance along with him.  
On the same day, Family Food Center also organised a sports contest for its Nepalese employees. The Pot Breaking Game — a fun Nepali game — was won by Pemba Lama. Dil Bahadur Bhandari won the first prize in a football kicking game. The Tiger Group won the tug-of-war competition.
