Best Buddies Qatar and 20 General Electric (GE) volunteers recently held an event for children from Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs and Al Hedaya Primary School. The event was titled “Comfort for Kids”.

Prior to getting acquainted with the students, the GE volunteers attended training on the aspects of behaviours with people with intellectual disabilities, presented by Rayane al-Jamal, a Special Needs Coordinator at Best Buddies Qatar.

At the event, the volunteers introduced their work, mission and vision to participants, which was followed by numerous fun activities including stuffing Teddy Bears, collecting BBQ logo puzzles, and making boards with colourful handprints which GE and Best Buddies Qatar kept as memories.

Sameer More, the leader of GE Volunteers in Qatar, said: “Volunteering and contributing positively to our community is a key commitment at GE, and we explore opportunities to partner with local organisations involved in activities that contribute in making a difference in society. We are happy to have partnered with Best Buddies Qatar, and to be part of their noble initiative.”

Zaid Khayyat, a GE Volunteer, said: “The training session provided to us was invaluable and helped us sharpen our focus and commitment to the volunteering work.”

Best Buddies Qatar said in a statement that it is “grateful that GE volunteers supported its noble mission to enhance life of students with intellectual disabilities.”

Best Buddies Qatar was established in Qatar in 2008 and aims to provide opportunities for socialisation, training and career support for people with intellectual disabilities across Qatar.

GE Volunteers is a team within GE that includes employees, retirees, friends and family, who take up social initiatives in more than 150 locations across 55 countries.
