The oldest living couple in Asia has been officially recognised in Vietnam, officials said yesterday.

Documents had confirmed the birth dates of farmers Cao Vien, 106, and Vu Thi Hai, 100, according to the Vietnam Guinness Book Centre, its director Le Tran Truong An told DPA.

“We have sufficient evidence that proves their date of birth,” he said.

The couple, from Nghe An province in central Vietnam, married in 1933.

They have eight children, and 122 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, An said.

“Their secret to longevity is to always be happy and have a suitable diet,” An added.

The Guinness Centre submitted its findings to the Asia Book of Records organisation in New Delhi, which declared the couple to be Asia’s oldest on Wednesday.

“This is the first time the Asia Book of Records has recognised the oldest couple in Asia,” An said.

Last month the Vietnam Guinness Book Centre recognised 121-year-old Nguyen Thu Tru as the oldest living person in the country.

She lives with her youngest son, 72, in Ho Chi Minh City.
