A senior leader of the main opposition BNP has been charged with hatching a plot to kill Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Police has filed the case against Ullah Mamun, the deputy chief of BNP’s cultural front.
Sub-Inspector Mamun, in-charge of the investigation, said a number of unnamed BNP leaders had also been made
accused in the case.
Anwar Hossain, deputy commissioner of police, said that the case was filed upon the permission from the home ministry after the police found evidence of the allegation.
On March 4, a US court sentenced Mamun’s son Rizve Ahmed Caesar for his involvement in a bribery scheme to obtain confidential information from a former FBI special agent in New York.
According to a statement of the US Justice Department, Rizve sought confidential information about a Bangladeshi political figure who was affiliated with a political party
opposing Rizve’s views.
In a press briefing yesterday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Monirul Islam said Mamun’s involvement in the conspiracy to kill Joy was found during investigation.
“Mamun made the plan to abduct and kill Sajeeb Wazed Joy at the BNP office in Nayapaltan and other places in Dhaka,” Monirul said.
He said top BNP leaders financed Mamun’s son Rizve to bribe the former FBI agent. “That is why several BNP leaders were also made accused in the case. However, their identities could not be found as yet.”
In a Facebook post on March 9, Joy wrote: “When someone tries to kill me, I take it very personally. No matter how high-up they may be in the BNP, I will bring them to justice.”
Joy, a computer engineer, is living in the US and occasionally visits Dhaka to advise the prime minister on information technology affairs.
