The Bangladesh High Court (HC) on Monday rejected the petition filed by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia for cancelling a petitioner’s deposition in the trial of Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against her.
An HC bench comprising Justice Moinul Islam and Justice JMB Hasan heard the petition, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Khurshid Alam Khan told reporters.
AJ Mohammad Ali appeared for Khaleda Zia.
Earlier on May 25, a Dhaka court rejected the defence lawyer’s petition for scrapping the deposition given by the plaintiff of the case, ACC deputy director Harun-ur Rashid, on six dates in absence of
accused Zia.
Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-3 passed the order.
On June 15, Zia filed the criminal revision petition with the HC against the rejection of her petition by lower court.
On July 3, 2008, the ACC filed a graft case against the Zia Orphanage Trust with Ramna police station, accusing Zia, her eldest son Tarique Rahman, now living in the UK after securing bail, and four others for misappropriating over 21mn taka ($283,333) which came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
On August 5, 2010, Harun-ur Rashid submitted a charge-sheet to the court in the case against six people, including BNP chairperson Zia.
