The toll in an accident involving two passenger buses in Bangladesh has escalated to 34, media reported yesterday.

Police said a Rajshahi-bound bus of Keya Paribahan on Monday collided head-on with a Gurudaspur Upazila-bound bus of Othoi Paribahan in the Rejir Morh area of Natore district, bdnews24.com reported.

The government has opened an investigation into the mishap.

Witnesses and survivors blamed the Keya Paribahan bus for the accident saying it rammed into the other bus while overtaking a truck.

Traffic on the key highway resumed in the evening after two hours of blockage.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.

Bangladesh has one of the world’s highest death rates from transport accidents, due mainly to the poor state of roads and vehicles and a failure to comply with road rules.
