Bangladesh’s leading mobile phone operator has reached the 50mn subscriber milestone, the company said yesterday.

Grameenphone, a concern of Norway’s Telenor Group, said it had developed the largest network, reaching most areas of the country over the past 17 years.

“Today we celebrate our customers with this milestone,” chief executive officer Vivek Sood said in Dhaka.

Grameenphone has recently completed the nationwide rollout of 3G coverage.

“The real power of our industry is in bringing digital inclusion,” Telenor’s Asia operation chief Sigve Brekke said, adding that the company wanted to extend Internet access.

Five other mobile phone companies, including one state-run operator, together have 68mn subscribers across Bangladesh.

In addition to reaching the mass market, Grameenphone has provided rural women with loans to purchase mobile phones.
