Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam yesterday alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is spreading lies abroad as she accused BNP of taking a position against the country’s people.

“The prime minister has said in New York that BNP and Jamaat have taken a position against the country’s people by indulging in violence and terrorism. It is nothing but a complete lie,” he said.

Addressing a discussion, Fakhrul claimed that BNP is not a terrorist party and it does not believe in terrorism and violence.

“It is the Awami League which is a terrorist party. The prime minister is spreading lies against the country’s people going abroad. She deceived people by resorting to lies. We condemn Hasina’s such false statements,” he said.

Zia Sangskritik Sangathan organised the programme marking its 22 founding anniversary.

About his party’s stance on militancy and terrorism, Fakhrul said: “We want to unequivocally say that BNP is a liberal democratic party. We do not believe in militancy and terrorism. Awami league is behind violence and terror acts in the country. They do not want to allow democratic practice.”

Criticising the government’s “growing” repressive acts, he said the current administration with the help of law enforcers killed some 310 opposition leaders and activists and made 65 others disappeared.

The BNP leader warned that the government will not be able to resist people’s movement by resorting to repressive acts.

Pointing at BNP leaders and activists who got frustrated as the government could not be ousted before the January-5 polls, he said, “This government is holding office illegally. They cannot hang onto power in this way. They must go. We together with people force it to hold a fresh election through a movement. People’s movement does not go in vain.”
