The Bangladesh government has directed all the secretaries to interact online through their Facebook group to speed up functioning of civil bureaucracy and strengthen monitoring over development activities.

The senior officials were also instructed to introduce e-governance in the administrative functions to ensure transparency and accountability in public offices.

The instructions came at a meeting of the top civil servants with Cabinet Secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan in the chair, officials said.

The cabinet division earlier instructed all deputy commissioners and sub-district executive officers across Bangladesh to open Facebook accounts in order to highlight government activities and monitor social problems in their respective areas.

“The cabinet secretary has asked all secretaries to interact through Facebook group which has already been created to exchange their views and suggestions on various matters so that they can at least resolve problems instantly,” cabinet division additional secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed said at a briefing after the meeting.

He said that this was an informal forum of the secretaries where the senior officials could speak freely and also get instructions in line with the government policies.

Referring to the cabinet secretary, Ishtiaq said that all the secretaries were asked to carry out the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina properly and send progress report to the prime minister’s office.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been visiting all ministries in phases and every time she is giving some instructions relating to the ministries concerned, according to officials.

The cabinet secretary reminded the top bureaucrats of the prime minister’s instructions, saying that all ministries needed to have a time-bound action plan on the basis of priority and they should follow it properly.

He asked the secretaries to make sure the summaries they send to the prime minister’s office or the cabinet division are correct and well-written.

At least 16 secretaries from various ministries and divisions, including power, roads and highways, land, information and communications technology and economic relations, spoke at the meeting attended by 60 secretaries. The cabinet secretary asked the senior officials to make sure that tenders were floated online to ensure transparency and accountability, said
officials.
