Sixty villages under Sariakandi and Dhunat sub-districts of Bogra district were inundated as a dam collapsed yesterday.

Water Development Board (WDB) officials said that at least 500,000 people were marooned because of the embankment collapse.

Bogra’s Sonatola, Sariakandi, Sherpur, Gabtali, part of Sadar sub-district and Sirajganj’s Kazipur, Raiganj and Tarash sub-districts are inundated as the water in the Jamuna is flowing above 97cm of its danger level.

WDB  executive engineer Nurul Islam Sarkar said it was not possible to start the repair or reconstruction work until the rainy season ends.

Meanwhile, more than 7,80,000 people have been marooned following further deterioration of the flood situation in the Brahmaputra basin during the past 24 hours.

Besides, floods have damaged over 20,000 houses totally or partially. Standing crops on 62,000 hectares of land have been submerged in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Sirajganj districts, official sources said.

District and sub-district administrations have intensified relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit areas.
