Bangladesh has recalled the country’s ambassador to Lebanon, Gousal Azam Sarker, for his alleged misconduct. The foreign ministry in a letter to Sarker in Beirut on July 17 asked him to return to Dhaka and report to the ministry immediately, an official said. The official said there were several complaints against the ambassador. In one incident, the ambassador allegedly detained his domestic aide in his office for six hours. The matter reached such a state that it prompted Lebanese police to raid the Bangladesh chancery building to free the house help. The domestic aide of the envoy was allegedly involved in various illegal activities. In another incident, a Bangladeshi expatriate was recently arrested in Beirut. Members of the Bangladesh community there were extremely angry with the ambassador as they believe that he had his hands behind the arrest. Moreover, the ambassador has differences with counsellor Momenul Huq over several issues, including renting the Bangladesh chancery building in Beirut. The building was rented before ambassador Sarker took up his assignment in Beirut. The ambassador lodged a complaint with the foreign office that the chancery building was rented by counsellor Momenul without consulting him.
