Four people were arrested yesterday after they were caught assembling improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the parking area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, authorities said.
Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Jose Angel Honrado said the suspects were arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) while they were putting together the explosives inside a car at Terminal 3’s Parking B area.
Unconfirmed reports said the suspects intended to blow up Terminal 3 and the malls in front of it.
The identities of the four were withheld because the NBI was still investigating, Honrado said.
He also did not specify how many IEDs were found in the car.
Honrado assured the public that all NAIA terminals are secure.
“The MIAA authority assures the public that NAIA Terminal 3 and all other terminals remain safe and airport security personnel continue to stay vigilant in their respective areas,” he said in a statement.
Honrado added that MIAA supports all efforts of law enforcement agencies of government “toward protecting lives and properties from people or groups who want to instil havoc and disturb to peace and order in the country.”
Airport security forces stayed on alert after a “body bag” was found unattended at the Terminal 1’s arrival area yesterday afternoon.
An aviation police bomb disposal team inspected the bag and did not find any explosive.
The Revo and the bomb components were brought to NBI headquarters on Taft Avenue in Manila but were transferred immediately to an undisclosed location.
The NBI reportedly received a tip a month ago that a group carrying explosives would be at NAIA Terminal 3 on Sunday night.
The NBI did not show the media the bomb components, just the box where they were placed.
