Labour Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz yesterday said OFWs repatriated from countries wracked by crisis or in emergency situations, such as Libya, may opt to stay in the country for good because there are job opportunities available for them.

“Local employment is one of the components of the package of assistance the DOLE offers to repatriates through the Bureau of Local Employment under Assist WELL, a package of assistance and services the DOLE has adopted to ensure the successful reintegration of OFW repatriates by addressing their welfare, employment, livelihood, and legal needs,” said Baldoz.

It is a convergent programme of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), National Reintegration Center for OFWs, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Bureau of Local Employment, Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns, International Labour Affairs Bureau and the Labour Communications Office, all offices under the DOLE.

For local employment, Baldoz said she had connected with a local construction, engineering and power conglomerate which offers numerous positions similar to or related to the jobs or occupations of repatriates from Libya.

These are management positions in power plant construction and operation, such as design managers, engineering managers, site managers, construction managers, commissioning managers and quality assurance/quality control managers.

The same conglomerate also has civil works vacancies, such as field engineers, office engineers, QA/QC staff, planning engineers and schedulers.

It also offers electrical works positions, such as turbine specialists, electrical generator engineers, electromechanical planners, and electromechanical schedulers.

For mechanical works, the vacancies are for welding inspectors, piping inspectors, coal handling specialists, boiler specialists, waste water treatment engineers and specialists, piping engineers and supervisors, and demi water engineers. For instrumentation and control, the vacancies are for design engineers for I&C, QA/QC supervisors for I&C, QA/QC I&C engineers, and I&C supervisors, engineers and technicians.

Baldoz said local salaries may be lower than salaries in OFW countries of destination, but she said OFWs who come home for good should seriously consider that being in one’s own country greatly mitigates the social cost of migration.
