Former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra left the country for France late yesterday.
Thailand’s military junta lifted its travel ban on the former premier last week, clearing the way for her to attend her brother’s birthday celebrations in France on
July 26.
Yingluck was banned from holding political affiliations and travel abroad after the military coup in May.  Her brother and former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, has been in exile since 2006 after being overthrown in a previous coup.
Yingluck is also facing indictment after the Thai corruption commission found the former prime minister guilty of negligence last Thursday.
Commentators have been weighing in on whether or not Yingluck will return to fight her court case or resort to exile like her brother.
Speaking to reporters at the airport late yesterday, Yingluck asked for privacy.  “I am tired. Please let’s talk when I return in August,” she said.
The National Anti-Corruption Commission, in a unanimous decision, found Yingluck guilty of negligence in the management of a rice subsidy scheme which led to widespread corruption.
