The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has opened the new signalised intersection which replaced the Qatar University roundabout.
Work started on the project on March 4 this year and it took almost six months for completion. The project was carried out in phases and two lanes were kept open in each direction for smooth flow of traffic.
The new signalised intersection is expected to ease congestion on the busy road that leads to Qatar University, Lusail International Circuit, Al Khor, and Ras Laffan among others.
One road from the intersection leads directly to the main entrance of Qatar University, which has nearly 9,000 students and about 2,000 faculty and staff.
On working days, there is a heavy flow of traffic to and from the national varsity. Thousands of vehicles also travel up and down daily on the road to Ras Laffan. “Negotiating the roundabout used to be a tricky business during peak hours, but the situation is expected to improve with the opening of the signalised intersection,” a faculty member of QU said.
