A passenger stands for iris recognition check at the Doha International Airport

The Interior Ministry has activated the iris recognition system at the Doha International Airport for the passengers entering Qatar with a  view to improving airport security.
Iris recognition is an automated method of biometric identification that uses mathematical pattern-recognition techniques on video images of the irises of an individual’s eyes, whose complex random patterns are unique and can be seen from some distance.
“Qatar is one of the first countries in the world to apply the iris recognition system,” said director of Airport Security and Passport Department, Brigadier Naser Ahmed al-Maliki, noting that the Interior Ministry has a large electronic database on irises, which are unique to every person.
The iris recognition is known to be the most accurate biometric security system in the world, he said, adding: “Thanks to this system, the unique pattern of the eye has to be recognised to be positively identified.”
There are no health risks associated with using iris recognition technology, Brigadier al-Maliki said.
