Dr al-Ansari and Dr al-Kuwari speaking with liver transplant recipient at the Hamad Hospital

The HMC, which launched the Qatar Centre for Organ Transplantation (QCOT) last week, has become the first medical centre in the region to successfully perform liver transplant.
The transplanted liver was donated by a 48-year-old Filipino expatriate, who died of a cerebral stroke, to a 43-year-old Egyptian who had suffered for several years of complications due to hepatitis C.
The recipient is recovering well after the life changing surgery and is being closely monitored by the medical team from the QCOT along with a team of medical professionals at Hamad Hospital.
The surgery team, led by HMC surgery department chairman and consultant surgeon Dr Abdulla al-Ansari, included three consultant surgeons specialising in liver transplants - Hatem Khalaf, Mohamed Shoudry and Henrique Yaktsen - as well as consultant anesthesiologist Mohamad Nagy al-Masri.
The achievement by the team is being dedicated to HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, in recognition and appreciation of her support to the National Organ Transplant Programme.
The feat is also a testimony to HMC’s continuous commitment to represent and achieve HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani’s vision for Qatar to become one of the world’s leading countries in medical services, especially in organ transplants.
HMC managing director Hanan al-Kuwari said: “We are proud of this achievement which is the culmination of the efforts of an integrated medical and administrative team over a period of more than two years. HMC achieved its goal and integrated the liver transplant programme into the Qatar Programme for Organ Transplantation. This was part of the organisation’s continuous commitment to excellence and improvement which brings real life changing results for our patients.”
Dr Al-Ansari said: “Dr Hanan al-Kuwari’s leadership and support of the Liver Transplant Programme’s efforts since its inception, was instrumental to the success of this surgery. She ensured that all success factors were available for this programme, from the submission of the programme’s first idea, to the selection of the surgical team members and their training in the world’s best medical institutions.”
