Exxon-Mobil chairman and chief executive Tillerson honouring HE al-Attiyah

HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority, was honoured at a ceremony hosted by ExxonMobil last night for his contribution to the development of Qatar’s oil and gas industry.
The event was held at the new Al Shaqab equestrian facility in Doha, Qatar, in conjunction with the 20th World Petroleum Congress.
It was attended by more than 500 people, including HE Dr Mohamed Saleh al-Sada, Minister for Energy and Industry, and other dignitaries and leaders in the energy industry from around the world who took the opportunity to highlight al-Attiyah’s leadership and approach to a sound policy framework that provided a strong, stable foundation for the development of the oil and gas industry.
HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani recognised al-Attiyah’s many talents and selected him to lead the Ministry of Energy and Industry during a pivotal period in the country’s history when Qatar was poised to develop the North Field.
Today, Qatar has achieved annual production from the North Field of 77mn tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG), making Qatar the world’s largest LNG supplier.
“HE al-Attiyah’s leadership and the story of Qatar’s natural gas development illustrate the progress and prosperity that is possible when people come together the way Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil have,” said Exxon Mobil Corporation chairman and chief executive Rex W Tillerson.
“I know I speak for all ExxonMobil employees who have had the privilege to work in Qatar and in particular to have the privilege to work with al-Attiyah, in saying that it has been a pleasure to be part of this journey,” he said.
HE al-Attiyah thanked HH the Emir for the vision to develop Qatar’s oil and gas industry.
“It is because of his vision and under his guidance that we are able to celebrate our position as the world’s leading LNG producer.
“I am most grateful that he gave me the opportunity to play a role in Qatar’s inspirational story of growth,” said HE al-Attiyah.
“When I look back over my career, I can hardly believe what we have accomplished – from the early days working with Mobil, to the robust and successful partnership we enjoy with ExxonMobil today.
“The achievements shared between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil are truly remarkable – bringing teamwork and technology together to develop the successful LNG business we have today.”
Al-Sada praised al-Attiyah for his integrity, loyalty, and the ability to bring people together to work as one team.
“Personally, I spent more than half of my professional life with HE al-Attiyah, and during that period, he enabled Qatar Petroleum to take a quantum leap in different directions.
“He came to the helm at a time when Qatar did not produce a single drop of liquefied natural gas.
“Today, Qatar produces 77mn tonnes of LNG per year, and is the leading producer. The face of the industry has been completely changed because of HE al-Attiyah, and we are most proud of the achievements realised during his leadership of the energy sector.”
Also taking the opportunity to recognise Qatar’s unique history, the event showcased the visionary new equestrian facility at Al Shaqab, which stands as an enduring tribute to the Arabian horse and the tradition of equestrian excellence in Qatar.
The new 800,000sq m facility is considered the premier equestrian facility in the world and houses multiple facilities, including indoor and outdoor arenas, breeding and show centres, an equine exercise centre, stables, a veterinary centre and a riding academy.
