The fourth Reach Out to Asia (Rota) Gala Dinner and Charity Auction, featuring a special collection of original and rare pieces from some of the world’s biggest art talents, is expected to raise significant funds to support Rota’s ongoing education and community development programmes in Asia and the Middle East.
In the presence of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Qatar Foundation chairperson, the highlight of the Qatari social calendar will attract 500 VIP guests from Qatar and around the world at the Katara Cultural Village on
December 12.
One of the traditional Rota Gala Dinner highlights is the Grand Charity Auction, which will again be managed by the world famous auction house, Sotheby’s, as they have done with previous Rota Gala Dinner auctions, and will be conducted by Sotheby’s Europe deputy chairman, Lord Poltimore.
Lord Poltimore said: “Sotheby’s is honoured to work shoulder to shoulder with Rota to help the children of Asia. The charity auction will help ensure that thousands more young people receive quality education.”
Available for auction to Rota Gala Dinner guests will be two original artworks by UK artist Damien Hirst (Methyl Salicylate 2005 and Beautiful Magnificent: It’s the Stuff of Legends). In addition, Lot 1 includes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the winning bidder to spend a day with Damien Hirst creating an original piece of art.
Tablet Faceted Honey Quartz Earrings from Angelina Jolie’s collection
Continuing the auction’s artistic theme, other featured lots include Elevational Weights (Vertical 2010), a paint stick by American minimalist sculptor Richard Serra, as well as original works by Cai Guo Qiang (Horse in Doha), Matthew Day Jackson (Cult of Death) and Yousaf Ahmad (Teach Your Son).
Sports fans have the chance to bid for a VIP trip donated by Qatar Foundation, QSI and Barcelona Club for four to watch one of the most famous matches in world football when Spain’s FC Barcelona, sponsored by the Qatar Foundation, tackle arch rivals Real Madrid CF. The lucky winning bidder and their guests will also enjoy a private tour of the FC Barcelona’s Nou Camp stadium, a signed match ball and
signed shirt.
Actress and philanthropist Angelina Jolie will also personally donate a set of earrings from her own jewellery line to the auction. These golden Citrine earrings were the first prototypes in the development of the new collection of the “Style of Jolie.” Following the creative brief, these Citrine earrings were faceted into four tablet shapes and fabricated with warm yellow gold and rolled to form the frame for the gems. These Citrine earrings are Angelina’s personal jewels. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, all four Rota Gala Dinners have offered guests a collection of amazing items for auction, but we’ve never combined such an exceptional collection of original artworks,” says Rota director Essa al-Mannai.
The Al Koora Art Project engaged children with special needs from seven different institutions, namely the Dhreima Orphanage, Al Noor Institute for the Blind, Best Buddies Qatar, the Qatari Centre for the Deaf, Hope Qatar, the Qatar Society for Rehabilitation of Special Needs, and the Qatar Paralympic Rehabilitation of Special Needs, to participate in a series of art workshops held at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQ).
Along with VCUQ students, aspiring Qatari artists and volunteers, the children created works of art that represented different elements of Qatar, its people, and its natural environment, in the past, present and future. The theme was reflected through artistic expression such as painting, drawing, and poetry.
Gala Dinner guests seeking to indulge their need for speed will be keen to bid for Lot 4, a limited edition Porsche Panamera 4S. Only 66 of these German supercars have been built, all for the booming Middle East luxury car market, and one lucky Rota Gala Dinner big spender will drive away a unique automobile.
“Rota wishes to place on record our thanks to Gold Sponsor Msheireb properties, Silver Sponsor Qatar Petroleum and Bronze Sponsor Qatar Vinyl Company. Their support demonstrates their understanding of the important role education plays in giving young people the chance of a better future,” added Essa al-Mannai.
A limited number of seats and corporate tables for this prestigious event are available.
