QEERI, a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), has identified solar energy as one of the core research areas to be conducted with CIEMAT, who are world leaders in the field of solar energy research.
Rabi Mohtar, executive director, QEERI, stated: “Qatar is blessed with huge solar energy resources, and we must always remember that clean, low-cost energy is critical to the development and sustainability of Qatar’s economy.”
The MoU between the two institutions was signed by Mohtar and Cayetano Lopez Martinez, general director of CIEMAT.
Mohtar said that under the agreement, CIEMAT will help Qatar address some of the challenges that are specific to the country, such as high temperatures, humidity and dust, in order to maximise the productivity of solar technology. As world leaders in the field, CIEMAT can also provide expertise on developing solar powered desalination systems, which is one of QEERI’s most significant projects. The Spanish research institute will also share their knowledge on wind and other renewable technologies to help develop Qatar’s sustainable energy industries, in co-operation with Qatar Science and Technology Park.
The MoU is intended to last an initial seven years to study and develop solar technology research capacity for the region.
