Participants of the W Doha’s ‘World Heart Day’ art contest
W Hotel Doha supported the World Heart Day (WHD) this year by holding an art contest among its Talents, who were asked to draw and paint works based on the  theme of “One World, One Home, One Heart”.
Participants’ works were submitted and judged on the World Heart Day on September 29. Special prizes were awarded to the winners whose works will be exhibited in the hotel’s Green Room and New Escape Training Room.
Activities that the Talents have organised in support of WHD included a walk through the Corniche with Dominic from W Doha’s Sweat gym doing aerobic exercise with them.
There was also a “healthy food only” menu in the Talents’ Green Room such as salads, grilled items and fish dishes - no junk food were served.
For the past two weeks ‘Heart Awareness’ slides about heart topics have been shown to Talents in the Green Room to ensure they keep up with healthy eating and exercise habits.
Edgar Vaudeville, a manager at W Doha, said: “W Doha’s Talents are amazing at going the extra mile to support good causes and setting an example in the community by making an effort to contribute to these with their flair and ability. Cardiovascular diseases are the world’s largest killers, claiming 17.3mn lives a year. Contrary to popular belief, four out of five of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and men and women are equally affected.”
According to the official, the good news was that 80% of premature heart attacks and strokes are preventable.
“Healthy diet, regular physical activity, and not using tobacco products are the keys to prevention.  This is the key message behind W Doha ’s WHD commemoration.”
Risk factors for heart disease and stroke are well-known and  they include raised blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, smoking, inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables, obesity and physical inactivity.
In partnership with the World Health Organisation and in recognition of WHD, the World Heart Federation organises health awareness events in more than 100 countries.
